Memphis International Blues Challenge

Howdy folks, I'm here with another update for ya. A few days ago I returned to Australia from my short trip over to Memphis Tennessee. Lachy, Jan and I went over to compete in the International Blues Challenge as the Lachy Doley Group. It was one hell of a ride and I thought I would share with you some tales from our trip.

Here's what happened...

We arrived at our accomodation on Mud Island which was a nice little town house complete with rocking chair out the front (how typically southern, haha) and settled in for our short stay. It was pretty cold over there, but we were ready for a week of great music in the home of the blues!!

We played our 2 heats at the famous BB Kings Club and had a great time during our short sets on the nights of the quarter finals. Unfortunately we didn't make it through to the semi finals which was a bit of a sad result, but nonetheless we played our best and gave it a good go.

After we heard that it was the end of the comp for us we decided to go check out some of the iconic sites in and around Memphis. We went to the legendary Stax Museum of American Soul Music which was a great step back in time.

We also checked out Sun Studios (formerly the Memphis Recording Service) and it was such a cool experience to step into the live room where so many groundbreaking recordings were made. They still have all the old microphones in the studio and we found out that they still do sessions there! Lachy was kicking himself that he didn't know that earlier, it would have been amazing to record in that room, had we planned in advance.... Oh well, if we come back, we will do it for sure!!

I had to make a quick stop at the legendary Memphis Drum Shop while we were there too. As much as I wish I could have walked out of there with some sexy rare drums, I bought sticks and a t shirt, haha.

Thanks Memphis, hope to see you again soon!!!!
